Free exhibition to the origins of Michelangelo’s Pieta from 13 October to 13 January 2019.
From October 13 to January 13, 2019, Vesperbild exhibition will be held in the halls of the ancient Spanish hospital Castello Sforzesco. Alle origini delle Pietà di Michelangelo. The exhibition, which will return to the origins of Michelangelo’s Pieta, will be led by Antonio Mazzotta and Claudio Salsi.
The composition of “Pieta” could be based on samples of medieval plastics from Germany, the Netherlands and France. The image of Our Lady of Sorrow in German art is called Wesperbild (Vesperbild). Michelangelo was able to create a harmonious and beautiful image of the Madonna, full of architectural monumentality, which makes it possible to see here a symbolic resemblance of the Virgin Mary to the Enlightened throne and temple.
The exhibition features works by great Italian artists and important international institutions such as Musée du Louvre, British Museum e Victoria and Albert Museum, la Liebieghaus di Francoforte sul Meno, la Biblioteca Trivulziana.
